GROUNDS AND GARDENS
Fort Royal is situated in 17 acres of lawns, mature trees, shrubs, rockeries etc
Below are some of the highlights of the gardens and grounds. Click on camera icons on the map for photos.
Arboretum :
In 2000 one of the original paddocks was carefully converted to the Arboretum, consisting of many different and rare variety of trees, all of which are maturing well. Planted in memory of Dr and Mrs Johnstone who opened Fort Royal in 1950.
Walled Kitchen Garden :
Guests are encouraged to walk round the walled garden at the back of the house, which has a large variety of fruit, vegetables, shrubs, herbs and flowers.
Pitch and Putt Golf Course :
Fort Royal has a 9 hole pitch and putt course in the grounds. The holes are between 50 and 100 yards long and with small greens the course is certainly not easy. The holes run along the beach front amongst many trees and shrubs, making it one of the most picturesque pitch and putt courses in Ireland.
Tennis Court :
Hard surface tennis court overlooking the lough.
Lawns and Mature Trees :
The house is surrounded by mature trees , some over 200 years old and well manicured lawns by the main drive and creeping down to the beach.
Tower and Pumphouse:
There is a stone tower in the middle of the golf course, built in 1880, by one of the Montgomery Family. Contrary to many theories, it was built with no real purpose other than a fun idea at the time!
Also on the golf course is a restored stone pumphouse, which was last used in the 1960's.
