The hotel has 15 well appointed bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms and all but three have a view of the sea. They are all furnished to a level of comfort and taste as befitting a country house hotel.
Five of the bedrooms are classed as superior, purely because they are slightly larger in size than the standard rooms.
The House was built in 1805 by a Mr Charles Rae. He retired here after being wounded while serving in the British Navy with Admiral Lord Duncan. It was during his time in the Navy that he visited the island of Martinique. He must have enjoyed himself on the island because he named the house after the capital as it was then known, Fort Royal.
The house was later purchased in 1878 by General George Samuel Montgomery of the Indian Army. He was related to the famous Field Marshall and his family owned the house until 1940.
It was after the war in 1947 that a Dr Bill Johnstone, a G.P from Co.Derry and his wife Connie saw Fort Royal and decided to buy it.
In 1948 it began trading as a hotel for the first time , and in 1966, Ann Fletcher (Dr Johnstone's daughter) and her husband, Robin took over the running. The hotel is now in the hands of the third generation, their son Tim and his wife Tina.
